Rimini/Santarcangelo

June 13th, 2001         Full Day Excursion
Rimini was founded by the Romans in 268 BC, it gained full independence in the Middle Ages. The end of the XIII century saw the rise to power of the Malatesta dynasty, who made notable contributions to the artistic and cultural life of the city. Monuments include the Augustus Arch (27 BC), erected in honour of Emperor Caesar Augustus, and the Tiberius Bridge (14-21 AD), with five arches in white limestone. The Malatesta Temple presents the exterior part designed by Leon Battista Alberti while inside there are several works of art, such as a crucifix by Giotto and fresco by Piero della Francesca. The XIII century Palazzo dell’Arengo,  the XIVcentury Palazzo della Podestà and the Malatesta Castle deserve a visit.
For its beauty and for the sobrietà of its medieval architecture the historical centre of Santarcangelo can be considered a inique monument tha has reached intact. The village surrounded by a wall that was rebuilt in the XV Century by Sigismondo Malatesta is characterized by a network of really suggestive little roads and alleys that take towards the Malatesta Fortress.
Collegiata Church dating back to 1758 in the baroque style with interesting paintings by Guido Cagnacci should not to be missed. Interesting visit also to the ancient canvas printing shop with mangonel dating back to ‘600.
